HONOLULU — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is inviting the public to comment on a draft of its updated recreation plan.

The department reviews the plan every five years to assess Hawaii’s outdoor recreation needs and priorities. The review helps ensure Hawaii is eligible to receive federal grants.

Officials prepared the draft based on comments submitted through online surveys and public meetings between January and March last year.

The department said in a statement Wednesday members of the public and recreation agencies notice Hawaii’s growing population is increasing demands on outdoor recreation facilities.

The department says ocean sports are a high priority for residents and visitors, but user conflicts remain a challenge. Sports fields are in high demand, especially with year-round seasons.

The department will accept public comments through April 30.
