Free film showings celebrate architecture month
To celebrate April as architecture month, the Hawaii Island Section of the Honolulu Chapter of the American Institute of Architects invites the public to three free film presentations of “Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio.”
Island architects hope the film will serve as a launching point for further public discussion about design in Hawaii.
The film will be shown at 6 p.m. April 16 at Donkey Mill Art Center, at 5:30 p.m. April 23 at the W.M. Keck Observatory Headquarters, Hualalai Learning Theater in Waimea. It will also be shown at 6 p.m. April 30 in the Hawaii Innovation Center at Hilo conference room.

Roth recognized at science and engineering fair
Noa Roth, Konawaena Middle School seventh-grader, was presented the Davis Young Scientist Award March 24 at the 58th Hawaii State Science &Engineering Fair at the Hawaii Convention Center, for his research project “Lime vs. Baking Soda.” The compounds are commonly used to control coqui frog populations. Roth’s research studied the effects of these chemical compounds on the surrounding plants where it is sprayed.
With this research, Roth previously participated in the West Hawaii Science Fair, earning the right to represent the island at the state competition. The Hawaii State Science Fair featured 457 students ranging from grades six through 12 from Hawaii public and private schools. The best projects from each school or district fair were selected for participation at the state level. There were 17 research subject categories including animal science, environmental science and chemistry.
The fair is hosted by the Hawaii Academy of Science using volunteer judges representing a wide range of interests and expertise from the public and private sector.
