HONOLULU — State Senators have voted to oust Hawaii Senate President Donna Mercado Kim and replace her with Sen. Ron Kouchi.

The Senate passed a resolution to making the change in leadership Tuesday.

It’s an unusual move because typically senators choose their leaders after elections. Kouchi and Kim are both Democrats.

Republican Sen. Sam Slom says some senators may have been turned off by Kim’s tendency to ask questions. But he says that characteristic is important.

Kim says it has been a privilege to serve the Legislature for the past three sessions.
