Play with a Vet Tournament

Sign-up is open for the Play With a Vet Golf Tournament — a three-person scramble golf tournament to be held on May 16 at the Makalei Golf Course on the Belt Road hosted by Kona VFW Post 12122 and Christopher Camero as a Veteran’s Fund Raiser.

Prizes include $10,000 designated hole-in-one and longest drive and closest to pin skill challenges.

Individual fee is $100, three-person team $270 and military is $80.00 per person.

Check in time is 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Buffet lunch will be served at the post, which is located at 74-5543 Kaiwi St., #185A behind Kona Locksmith.

Konawaena Stingrays Basketball Camp

The Konawaena Stingrays Basketball Camp will be held June 8-11 at Konawaena High School’s Onizuka Gymnasium.

Ages 5-11 will play from 9 a.m. to noon; ages 12-16 will be from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

The cost of the camp is $80 and participants are asked to register by May 25.

Horseshoe club to start second league play

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club will begin it’s second league play of 2015 on April 30 at the Kona Palms Courts horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park.

Membership is required for this approximately eight to ten week sanctioned doubles league. New or returning players will be paired whenever possible. Handicap scoring is used enabling players of all levels to participate. League play is from 4-6 p.m. on Thursdays, with a weekly fee of $5.

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club offers free, informal play from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays at Kona Palms Courts. Pitchers of all levels are welcome.

Hawaii Cycling Club Opolu Airport Training Time Trial

The Hawaii Cycling Club is offering training for the IRONMAN 70.3-Hawaii.

The annual Upolu Airport Training Time Trial takes place May 9 with three courses (all on the IRONMAN 70.3-Hawaii bicycle course): 24.7 miles, 15.5 miles and six miles.

The event is free to annual HCC members. A one day membership is $10.

The three courses will start at 8 a.m. at three different locations but all will end at the Upolu Airport two-mile sign on Hwy. 270.

The 24.7-mile course will start opposite the finish line, head south on Hwy 270 for 12.35 miles, make a U-turn between the seven and eight mile-markers and return north on Hwy. 270. For safety there will be traffic control police officers and signage at the U-turn.

The 15.5 mile course is the traditional course, starting at the north end of Maluokalani St. in Kawaihae on Hwy. 270 and ending at the Upolu Airport two-mile sign.

The six-mile course will start at the Lapakahi Park turnoff and end at the Upolu Airport two-mile sign.

The talk story aid station will be at the finish line.

One training option is to ride from either Hapuna Beach or the Mauna Lani to Malukona St. Compete in the 15.5 mile training time trial and ride back to Hapuna Beach or Mauna Lani.

Tennis camp atHilton Waikoloa

Pa Le’a Le’a Tennis at the Hilton Waikoloa is offering a junior tennis/sports camp in two week intervals for the months of June and July.

The camps will be held on the Hilton’s newly resurfaced six-court tennis facility.

Camps will run all day, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 pm.

Hilo Triathlon registration

Early registration is open for the 2nd Annual Hilo Triathlon.

Returning to James Kealoha Beach Park on July 12, the Olympic-distance race is limited to 500 participants.

Now through April 30 the entry fee is only $200 for individuals and $100 for relay team members. Registration closes midnight on July 2.

Athletes from as far away as Australia participated in last year’s inaugural event, which again features a 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride, and a 10km run.
