Kealakehe Project Grad receives grants

Project Grad recently received grants totaling $9,000 from Hawaii County contingency relief funds initiated by District 8 Rep. Karen Eoff and the Bill Healy Foundation via the Kona Brewers Festival.

These grants will help in continuing the mission of Project Grad in providing a safe and secure, alcohol-, tobacco- and drug-free annual event, offering an alternative to dangerous and potentially fatal celebrations.

Since its inception in 2000, Kealakehe Project Grad has provided an alcohol- and drug-free event to graduating high school seniors on one of the most dangerous nights of their lives: graduation night celebrations. On average, 80 percent of the graduating class from Kealakehe High School participates annually in this nightlong event. In addition, the program also serves the North Kona area, graduating seniors from West Hawaii Explorations Academy and qualifying home-schooled seniors are invited to attend.

Seniors from qualified schools are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Space is still available as well as a limited number of scholarships. Visit khsprojectgrad.com.

Kealakehe Project Grad takes place from 10 p.m. June 3 to 6 a.m. June 4.

Postal Service to collect food donations Saturday

More than 175,000 mail carriers across the nation will lead the Postal Service’s effort to “Stamp Out Hunger” by collecting food donations Saturday in the 23rd annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive.

The drive is the nation’s largest one-day effort to combat hunger and is held to support the mission of community food banks such as the Hawaii Foodbank. Last year, more than 62,000 pounds of food were collected on Hawaii Island.

Residents are urged to place nonperishable food items next to their mailbox for pickup on Saturday before their usual mail pickup time.
