A Hilo man is being held on a terroristic threatening charge in connection with a May 14 confrontation in Hilo.

At 8:12 a.m. on Thursday, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report that a man had brandished a knife and firearm during a verbal argument and threatened a 42-year-old Hilo man and a 62-year old Hilo woman at the intersection of Ponahawai Street and Kilauea Avenue.

A few minutes later, police located the suspect, Paiea Young, 20, at his Haili Street apartment. He was arrested and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

Detectives served a search warrant on Young’s apartment and recovered a BB gun and a knife matching the description of the one used in the confrontation. At 3:30 p.m. Friday, Young was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $5,000.

Young remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday, May 18.
