Ride of Silence scheduled Wednesday

Kona’s two largest cycling groups are teaming up Wednesday evening for the annual Ride of Silence honoring cyclists who have died in traffic accidents and demanding action from public officials to ensure that the investigation of a recent cycling fatality results in justice for the cyclist who was killed.

The Hawaii Cycling Club and Coffee Talk Riders encourage all cyclists and concerned citizens to join them at West Hawaii Civic Center at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday for a brief ceremony followed by a short, silent ride together in the vicinity of the civic center.

Riders may bring black armbands and are encouraged to use riding lights if they have them, “but just being there is the strongest statement you can make,” said Hawaii Cycling Club president Daniel Hodel. Helmets are required and non-club members will be provided with free one-day memberships for insurance purposes.

“There is much that can be done to prevent such accidents and improve the climate for cycling on the Big Island,” Hodel added. “But unless motorists are held accountable, no matter who they are, everything else we do is rendered meaningless.”

A second Big Island Ride of Silence will be held on the same day in Hilo, organized by PATH and the East Hawaii cycling community.

Kona Amateur Radio Society meets

The Kona Amateur Radio Society will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Wawaloli Beach Park at Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.

All members, friends, and those interested in amateur radio are invited. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share during the Thai-themed potluck in celebration of Buddha day.
