A Kona woman was in critical condition following a crash between a moped and a dump truck Tuesday in Kailua-Kona.

At approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday, the moped was merging onto the southbound lane of Queen Kaahumanu Highway from Hualalai Road, when it attempted to merge between a dump truck and the trailer it was pulling. The trailer ran over the moped, which was carrying an operator and a passenger, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet, police said.

The operator of the moped, a 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man, and his passenger, a 29-year-old Kailua-Kona woman, were taken to Kona Community Hospital. The passenger had critical head injuries. The operator’s injuries were minor. Police said Tuesday the woman had been flown to Oahu for further medical treatment.

The operator of the dump truck was not injured.

Police have initiated a negligent injury investigation in connection with the crash.
