LIHUE — A bill approved by the Kauai County Council committee seeks to limit the number of bed-and-breakfast permit applications reviewed per year and to change the way some owners of those establishments operate.
The Garden Island reports (http://bit.ly/1JYHZJV) the council’s planning committee approved the bill by a four-to-one vote at a hearing Wednesday.
The new ordinance change will limit the number of B&B permit applications to 10 per year and will ensure that property owners reside onsite.
County officials say changes are necessary to prevent illegal Transitory Vacation Rental owners from exploiting a loophole in the current definition of a homestay.
Permits will be granted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Councilman Gary Hooser, the only one to vote against the bill, was against capping the number of permits that can be reviewed.
