Moku O Kohala accepting scholarship applications
Moku O Kohala, the Kohala Chapter of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, is awarding $1,000 scholarships for the upcoming fall semester to applicants who meet the following conditions:
1. Applicant must live in the district of Kohala. (Kohala, Waimea or Waikoloa)
2. Applicant must have a 2.5 grade point average from last completed semester, high school or college or university and transcript must be provided.
3. Applicant must have a letter of acceptance from the college or university of choice. For returning college or university applicants, the GPA of the last completed semester is required.
4. A short biography of the applicant and what their intended field of study is and what the applicant intends to do once their education is completed must be submitted.
Application deadline is June 30. The scholarship committee will announce the awards to successful applicants on July 15 and checks for half the award will be immediately mailed to the Student Financial Aid office of the awardees’ college or university. The other half of the award will be mailed upon successful completion of the first semester.

Grants available through Legacy Land Conservation Program
Protection of Hawaii lands having valuable cultural, natural, or agricultural resources can be achieved through grants from the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Legacy Land Conservation Program.
Applications can be made for annual grants from the State Land Conservation Fund for the acquisition and conservation of watersheds; coastal areas, beaches, and ocean access; habitat protection; cultural and historic sites; recreational and public hunting areas; parks; natural areas; agricultural production; and open spaces and scenic resources.
State agencies, county agencies, and nonprofit land conservation organizations may apply. Proposed projects may include acquisition of fee title or conservation easements. County agencies and nonprofit project applicants must be able to provide at least 25 percent of the total project costs.
The 2015-16 grant program may provide up to a total of $4.5 million in grants, awarded through a competitive process and subject to any budget restrictions. Funds are from the state’s land conveyance tax.
Applications will be reviewed by the Legacy Land Conservation Commission, which will nominate projects for funding. Final awards are subject to the availability of funds.
An application may be submitted by a nonprofit land conservation organization to seek $1.5 million in funding for the Turtle Bay Special Fund to fund the State’s acquisition of lands and a conservation easement at Turtle Bay, Oahu.
Starting June 1, the forms and instructions will be available at dlnr.hawaii.gov/ecosystems/llcp/apply/. Applicants must submit Agency Consultation Forms by July 1. Grant applications must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. Sept. 15.
