Equine Wellness Symposium planned

Hawaii Horse Expo will present its first Equine Wellness Symposium Sept. 11 through 13 at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel &Bungalows.

Topics will focus on prevention, identification and treatment of diseases, infections and wounds encountered by horse owners and veterinarians.

Symposium speakers include Leslie Easterwood, clinical assistant professor at Texas A &M University, Robert Miller, internationally renowned behaviorist, and Eric Mueller, diplomate with American College of Veterinary Surgeons and director of Equine Programs, University of Georgia.

A paniolo barbecue with country music and a silent auction at Paniolo Preservation Society in Waimea concludes the event on Sept. 13.

Proceeds benefit the Humane Society’s Horse Rescue Fund.

Registration for the 2015 Equine Wellness Symposium will be available at hawaiihorseexpo.com. Cost for two days of workshops is $265 per person including lunch. Cost for the barbecue will be announced.

Suicide prevention group to meet

The Kona Suicide Prevention Task Force meets from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center conference room, 75-5751 Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona. Everyone is welcome to attend.

VFW Post 12112 lists activities

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12112 is located behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street and is West Hawaii’s VSO welcoming all veterans and veteran service organizations.

The following events will be conducted for this week:

A free veterans coffee event is held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Veterans are invited to meet for camaraderie with others who have served honorably.

On Friday, the post offers a $5 onion burger with salad and dessert starting at 4 p.m.

Kona Orchid Society meets Friday

Kona Orchid Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at Makua Lani Christian Academy, 74-4966 Kealakaa St. off Palani Road.

Graham Wood of Lehua Orchids will speak on lycaste orchids. He may also mention paphiopedilums. More information about Wood is available on his website and visitors may order plants that he will bring to the meeting.

Attendees should bring a dish for the potluck, which begins at 6:15 p.m., and a pest-free blooming orchid for show and tell.

Household hazardous waste collection set

Household hazardous waste will be collected from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 13 at the Kailua-Kona recycling and transfer station in Kealakehe.

Business, government agency, nonprofit agency or farm waste and electronic waste are not accepted. Automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent lights, pesticides and latex paint will be accepted. For a more comprehensive list of acceptable or unacceptable waste, visit hawaiizerowaste.org.
