Police arrest 25 motorists for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between May 25 and Sunday. Nine of the drivers were involved with traffic crashes and one of the drivers was younger than age 21.

So far this year, there have been 426 DUI arrests compared with 521 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.2 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Eleven drivers were arrested in the Kona District, six were arrested in the Puna District and five were arrested in South Hilo. Two drivers were arrested in South Kohala and one motorist was arrested in the Ka’u District.

There have been 613 major accidents so far this year compared with 676 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.3 percent.

To date there have been 10 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with seven during the same period last year, an increase of 42.9 percent.

One of the fatalities was related to drugs and three were attributed to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
