Daughters of Hawaii meets Thursday
Daughters of Hawaii and Calabash Cousins will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday on the Hulihee Palace lawn. The guest speakers, master navigator Chadd Paishon and navigator Pomai Bertelman, have been voyaging with the Hokulea and have just returned. June birthdays will be celebrated. There will be music and refreshments. Guests and potential members are welcome.

Windermere staff to clean up Spencer Beach
The Waimea and Kailua-Kona staffs of Windermere/C and H Properties are joining the Coalition For a Tobacco-Free Hawaii and the Surf Riders to do beach cleanup at 9 a.m. Friday at Spencer Beach Park.
Windermere’s Community Service Day was established in 1984 to offer agents and staff a chance to volunteer an entire workday to give back to the neighborhoods in which they live and work.

Senior yoga classes offered
Elderly Recreation Services is offering a series of yoga classes for those age 55 and older.
The gentle yoga class is a series of stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
Classes are held at 8:30 a.m. Mondays starting Monday through June 29 at Hale Halawai and at 8:30 and 10 a.m. Fridays, starting Friday through June 26 at Hale Halawai. Classes are also offered at 8:30 a.m. Wednesdays starting Wednesday through June 24 in the West Hawaii Civic Center gazebo.
For those with limited mobility, chair yoga classes are offered at 10 a.m. Mondays starting Monday through June 29 at Hale Halawai.
Cost is $5 per class and registration and payment may be made the first day of class. Participants are encouraged to bring a beach towel or yoga mat and water.

Youth sport camp offered in Kealia
Last year, Dusty Boyd completed a summit of Lhotse and Everest back-to-back and raised enough money to complete an athletic field and kids gym in Kealia, South Kona.
There were 51 kids who participated in the first summer camp there, playing basketball, baseball, football, hula, dodgeball, kickball and they also competed in a decathlon.
This year, the summer camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through June 12, culminating in a Hershey’s track meet at Konawaena school from 9 a.m. to noon June 13.
Cost for the four-day camp is $20, which includes drinks, snacks, and lunch. Participants can sign up at the Fujihara and D&E stores or simply show up at 8 a.m. Tuesday at D&E Store in Kealia. Kids ages 6 through 15 are welcome.
Boyd arrives in Kona from Nepal Monday. He is in Nepal helping his sherpa’s villagers rebuild after the two devastating earthquakes. He has raised more than $16,000 for that effort.
Kawaihae Canoe Club hosts steak fry
Kawaihae Canoe Club will host a steak fry from 5:30 to to 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 at the door and include a steak dinner, country music, dancing under the stars, silent and live auction.

Maintenance of historic trail planned
E Mau Na Ala Hele, the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail staff, the Hawaii State Na Ala Hele Trails and Access System, the Ala Kahakai Trail Association and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel will celebrate National Trails Day Sunday with a walk of the historic trail between Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
The group will also perform maintenance on the trail as needed, walking and working through the morning. A potluck lunch is planned and a talk story of the history of the area will follow. Participants should bring gloves, small trimming tools, hats, sun protection, water, closed-toe footwear and a dish to share.

Applicants sought for whale sanctuary advisory council
Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is seeking to fill seven alternate seats and one primary seat on its advisory council. The council ensures public participation in sanctuary matters and provides advice to sanctuary management.
The sanctuary is accepting applications for the following seats: commercial shipping (primary), commercial shipping (alternate), Hawaii County (alternate), Lanai island (alternate), citizen-at-large (alternate), education (alternate), tourism (alternate), and whale watching (alternate).
Candidates are selected based on their expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying, community and professional affiliations, and views regarding the protection and management of marine resources. Applicants are expected to serve a two-year term.
