HONOLULU (AP) — The Navy and National Park Service are evaluating whether they’ll be able to reopen the USS Arizona Memorial to visitors after a mishap last week damaged its dock.
Navy Region Hawaii spokesman Bill Doughty says officials are checking the dock for structural and safety issues on Wednesday after conducting about a week of repairs.
The Navy and National Park Service have been aiming to reopen the memorial on Thursday.
A mishap involving the hospital ship USNS Mercy and two tugboats damaged the floating dock last week.
The Navy says the Mercy may have hit the dock as the tugboats were maneuvering the hospital ship out of Pearl Harbor. Waves generated by the propeller in the back of the Mercy also pushed the dock about 10 feet toward the memorial.
