Man dies after shootout with police on Maui

WAILUKU, Hawaii — A passenger who stepped out of a sport utility vehicle and exchanged gunfire with police officers in Wailuku has died.

Maui police say officers at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday stopped the SUV on Lower Main Street and Hookahi Street.

The Maui News reports the SUV pulled into the parking lot of a store, Discount Mini Mart, and a passenger emerged and started shooting.

A witness told the newspaper the man was wounded by police gunfire and shot himself. Police have not said how the man died but say he fired the first shots.

The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died. No one else was injured.

Police in a release say the SUV driver was taken into custody for questioning and released.
