Applicants sought for Kaloko-Honokohau advisory commission
Five people are being recruited by Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to serve on the Na Hoa Pili O Kaloko-Honokohau Federal Advisory Commission.
The purpose of the advisory commission is to advise the National Park Service with respect to the historical, archaeological, cultural, and interpretive programs of the park. The commission is to afford particular emphasis to the quality of traditional Native Hawaiian cultural practices demonstrated in the park. The commission has quarterly scheduled meetings that typically last three to four hours. Commissioners serve on a volunteer basis.

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets Saturday
The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Living Stones Church, 76-6224 Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.
Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

Kona Elks present grant to purchase fresh food for low-income seniors
Aunties Angels on behalf of Hualalai Senior Housing Group was the recipient of a $2,000 grant from Kona Elks Lodge No. 2616. Jan Benlein was presented with a $2,000 Costco credit card by Lodge Secretary Mary Reynolds and Exalted Ruler Joe Reynolds on Flag Day at the lodge. The funds will be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables twice a week to be distributed to seniors living at the at Hualalai Elderly Housing.
The money to purchase the card came from a Gratitude Grant obtained from Elks National. It was written, submitted and successfully obtained through the efforts of Ron Cole, Lodge grant coordinator.
West Hawaii Woodturners meet
West Hawaii Woodturners will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pac Rim Glasstempering building on Hulikoa Street mauka of Pine Tree Cafe.
Members and guests should bring a lunch and a chair.

Turtle Talk scheduled Saturday morning
Kahaluu Bay Education Center turtle biologist Rachel Silverman presents a talk story about honu on Saturday. Those attending will learn about the types of turtles found in Hawaii, why they are important to Hawaii’s ecosystems, what threats they face and how to protect them.
The monthly Turtle Talk will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants are asked to check in at the center’s mobile education unit in Kahaluu Beach Park, located at 78-6710 Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.
A $10 donation is requested to support education and conservation programs at Kahaluu Bay. All attendees receive a free informational turtle card. Call 887-6411 or email kahaluubay@kohalacenter.org for more information.
