HONOLULU (AP) — A lack of management and the state’s decision to remove signage from a popular trail on Oahu has locals frustrated and the Department of Land and Natural Resources looking for options.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/1H0SCN6) land management official David Smith says residents were told in October state signage for the Maunawili Falls Trail would be taken down. He said there’s no agreement with owner HRT Realty to help manage the land.
A resident’s handwritten signs attempt to direct the 1,000-2,000 hikers each week that use private land to get to Maunawili Falls. Locals say the tourists are intrusive and bring trash along with them.
HRT Realty could not be reached for comment.
Smith said the agency is working to solve the issue and provide public access to the falls.
