Douglas Akau

Douglas Elia Akau, 77, of Waimea died May 15, 2015. Born in North Kohala, he was a truck driver and Air Force veteran.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. June 20 at Imiloa Church, 65-1084 C. Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea for a 10:30 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

He is survived by daughter, Alita-Ray Cookman; sons, Logan (Desiree) E., Kinney (Cynthia) K. and Douglas K.; hanai daughter, Paula (Lawrence) Holt; sister, Janet Stevens; brothers, Apitai Jr., Alexander, Andrew; hanai brother, Joseph Huddy; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Bobby Lowry

Bobby G. Lowry, 74, of Captain Cook died June 13, 2015, at Nakamaru Hale. Born Feb. 17, 1941, in Texarkana, Ark., he was a painter, handyman and a friend of Bill W.

A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. June 20 at Pahoehoe Beach Park in Kailua-Kona. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He has no survivors.

Alfred Santos

Alfred F. Santos, 64, of Hilo, died May 25, 2015, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Sept. 11, 2015, in Honolulu, he was a retired truck driver for a construction company and member of the Hawaii Army National Guard.

A celebration of his life begins at 1 p.m. Sept. 26 at Wailoa State Park large pavilion in Hilo. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers and lei are welcome.

He is survived by companion, Karen Enriques Fukunaga; daughter, Jonelle Santos of Hilo; son, Justin Santos of Hilo; hanai daughters, Justine (Daniel) Camba and Roslyn Fukunaga, both of Pahala; brothers, Daniel (Diane) Santos Jr. and Bernard (Wendy) Santos, both of Hilo, Christopher Santos of Mountain View, Jeffrey Santos of Paauilo; sisters, Diana Alameida of Honokaa, Jessica Gonsalves of Hilo, Roberta Rabauliman and Danette (Richard) Range, both of Mountain View; 10 grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Gary Peters

Gary Peters, 60, of Ookala died May 29, 2015, in Ookala. He was born Oct. 4, 1954, in Los Angeles.

Katherine Harrington

Katherine “Kat” Faye Harrington, 57, of Kurtistown and formerly of Kaneohe, Oahu, died June 9, 2015, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a veterinary assistant, an account clerk with the state, artist and owner of Aloha Designs Maui.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Hilo.

She is survived by brother, Stuart (Nena) Harrington of Honolulu; sisters, Eileen Harrington of Captain Cook, Sharon (Ross) Harrington Williams of California; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mae Nakayama

Mae Yooko Nakayama, 82, of Hilo died May 30, 2015, at Hilo Medical Center. Born May 23, 1933, in Hilo, she was a retired court clerk for Hawaii State Judiciary Third Circuit and member of University Heights Community Association.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by sisters, Aileen Sylva, Sandra Shinozawa, Elsie Ushiroda, all of Honolulu; caregivers, Lorene Takeshita, Hannah Freitas, both of Hilo; two nephews and a niece.

Asayo Nakano

Asayo Nakano, 99, of Captain Cook died May 26, 2015, at the Buena Vista Care Home. Born March 3, 1916, in Olaa, she was a fry cook at the former Kona Hilton Hotel and member of the AFL-CIO and Daifukuji Soto Mission.

Private services were held.

She is survived by sons, Richard (Karen) Nakano of Keauhou, Dennis (Molly) Nakano of Kealakekua, Kenneth (Alma) Nakano of Pukalani, Maui; daughter, Anne Nakano of Las Vegas; brothers, Koshi Tomono of Napoopoo, Teruo Tomono of Japan, Yuki (Adlene) Tomono of Los Angeles; sister, Marilyn Fujikawa of Hawaii Kai, Oahu; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Harue Mende

Harue Mende, 94, of Hilo died May 26, 2015, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 19, 1921, in Kohala, she was a retired salesclerk for J.C. Penny Co. and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, Buddhist Women’s Association (Fujinkai), and Hiroshima Kenjin Kai.

Private services were held. Family request no flowers or monetary gifts.

She is survived by son, Howard Mende of Torrance, Calif.; daughter, Jane Mende of Hilo; brother, Terumi Kubomitsu of Honolulu; sister, Alice (Kaneo) Ino of Aiea, Oahu; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Bill Manning

Bill Joe Manning, 80, of Kailua-Kona died June 9, 2015, at his residence. Born Dec. 9, 1934, in Chanute, Kan., he was a retired business owner, an Ironman Triathlon volunteer and member of the Kona Elks Club.

Private service were held.

He is survived by wife, Delores Manning of Kailua-Kona; sons, Rick (Judy) Manning of Clackamas, Ore., Ron (Debbie) Manning of Washougal, Wash., Steve (Peggy) Manning of West Linn, Ore.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; numerous nieces and nephew.

Kalani Noa Aina, 56, of Pahoa died June 7, 2015. He was born in Hilo.

Pearly “Eliza” Pa, 78, of Hilo died June 6, 2015, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Wailuku, Maui, she was a sales associate at Shiigi Drugs, member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Hula Halau O Kawananakoa.

Robert “Bobby” Earl Costa, 64, of Hilo died June 11, 2015, at Pohai Malama. He was born Jan. 12, 1951, in Hilo.
