Lego program slated at library
The Kailua-Kona Public Library will offer the seventh in a series of Lego Junior Maker Programs at 10 a.m. Thursday. Children ages 8 to 11 will play, explore, tinker, experiment and use creativity to make a unique Lego structure.
This program is limited to the first 20 children and their adult partners. Projects are the property of the library and Lego bricks will be recycled for future programs.

Dryland taro workshop planned
Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook is offering a class in growing dryland kalo (taro) from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. The class is $30; $25 for Bishop Museum and Amy Greenwell Garden members. Call 323-3318 or email agg@bishopmuseum.org to register.
The Backyard Kalo Farming class takes students through the basics of preparing and planting huli. Huli are cuttings made from the top of the corm and the first few inches of the leaf stalk. Participants will practice making huli and learn about planting distances, soil preparation and fertilizing, pest control, irrigation and harvesting. Participants in the class will be able to take home huli to plant in their own gardens.
Attendees are invited to bring a lunch and stay at the garden for the 1 p.m. guided Hawaiian plant walk. The walks are supported by a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaii County Department of Research and Development.
Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication or a modification of policies and procedures to participate in the walks should contact Peter Van Dyke at 323-3318 at least two weeks before their planned visit.
Libraries hosting Super Hero Academy
In celebration of the Hawaii State Public Library Systems’ 2015 Children Summer Reading Program, HouseMart Ace Hardware and HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts will present Super Hero Academy, a free event at selected libraries.
Keiki ages 5 and old, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to experience a hardware science program featuring demonstrations, two interactive stations for exploring hardware science experiments such as making secret messages using lemons, and a super hero craft activity station to make-and-take a hero craft item. In this one-hour program, participants will receive a stamp card to record the completion of all three activities and receive a Super Hero Academy Graduation Certificate and a chance to enter a free prize drawing.
The Super Hero Academy program will be held at 10 a.m. Thurday at the North Kohala Public Library, 889-6655; 3 p.m. Thursday at the Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library, 887-6067; and 3 p.m. July 8 at the Kailua-Kona Public Library, 327-4327.
The event schedule is subject to change. Contact the hosting library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
Chamber of Commerce holds annual membership meeting
Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Membership and Installation Luncheon will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
Former National Public Radio Bureau Chief Neal Conan will be the keynote speaker. The event includes induction of new officers and directors for 2015-16. The chamber will also announce this year’s Pualu Awards and honor and recognize Hawaii Island 2015 Small Business Administration award winners.
This year’s Small Business Administration winners hailing from Hawaii Island include the state’s Small Business Person of the Year, Russell Ruderman of Island Natural Market Inc., and the state’s Entrepreneurial Success of the Year, Eric Tanouye of Green Point Nurseries Inc. County of Hawaii winners include Small Business of Person of the Year, Ray and Shelly Ciriako of Precision Auto Repair Corp; Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Diandra and Tyler Dickinson of Dickinson General Contracting LLC; Small Business Advocate of Financial Services, Maureen Datta of Adaptations Inc.; and Small Business Advocate for Minorities, Craig Takamine of Takamine Construction.
The annual Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce business expo will be open an hour before and after the luncheon and is open to the public.
