HONOLULU (AP) — Despite the University of Hawaii athletic department’s more than $4 million deficit, the athletics department is planning to spend about $496,000 on cost-of-attendance stipends for student-athletes.
KHON-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1dfuwAg ) that Athletics Director David Matlin says he is offering less than $2,000 for 248 student-athletes on top of the $400,000 being spent on a supplemental meal program for student-athletes and $7.7 million in scholarships.
The stipends for UH athletes would cover the cost for things such as laundry, transportation and electronics.
Matlin says the university will try to ease the department’s deficit of $4.2 million to $4.4 million by improving programs and cutting travel costs.
UH officials are also trying to get more money for stipends through fundraising efforts. They’ll decide how to divvy up the stipends by August.
