Officer of the Month luncheon planned

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Darren Cho as Officer of the Month on Wednesday. The guest speaker will be: Tanya Hardin, Hawaii Meth Project.

The public is invited to attend Officer of the Month luncheons normally held on the first Wednesday of each month. Cost is $20 all inclusive at Huggo’s. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or 443-7708 by Monday.

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports the Hawaii Police Department in its efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce laws. The committee also provides needed police equipment for use by Kona district officers when department funds cannot support those needs.

Mental Health First Aid class offered in Kailua-Kona

StressFreeSouls will train hundreds of corporate and government employees, teachers, parents, clergy and members of the public to improve mental health literacy, helping them identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness.

The first open community course will be from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kona Coffee Lounge, 75-170 Hualalai Road. The $99 cost includes a 200-page manual, a three-year national certification and light snacks. To register and pay for the course, visit stressfreesouls.com or call 626-5054.

Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour training certification course which teaches a five-step action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the individual. The program introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews common treatments. Thorough evaluations in randomized controlled trials and a quantitative study have proved the program effective in improving trainees’ knowledge of mental disorders, reducing stigma and increasing the amount of help provided to others.

Amateur radio enthusiasts to meet

Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. All members, friends and those interested in amateur (HAM) radio are invited.

This month’s food theme will be Mexican in celebration of Saint John the Baptist Day. Bring a favorite dish to share.

Cartoonist to give free library presentation

Cartoonist Sam Campos will present a program at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kealakekua Public Library.

Heo will give drawing demonstrations and explain practical applications of 3-D printing and how 3-D models can be utilized and created at home or in school.

Campos teaches art at the University of Hawaii’s Native Hawaiian Continual Education Program. He is the creator, writer and director of Hawaii-produced “DRAGONFLY.”

Offered as part of the Summer Reading Program and sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona this presentation is suitable for all ages and is free.

Clark Commercial Group to establish Sperry Van Ness franchise

Putman Clark, owner of Clark Realty Corporation, and Gregory G. Ogin, president of Clark Commercial Group, a division of Clark Realty Corp., recently announced that Clark Commercial Group has purchased the rights to establish a Sperry Van Ness franchise in Hawaii.

“Our partnership with the Sperry Van Ness organization will give us access to SVN’s extensive professional network, which includes over 180 offices and 820 commercial real estate advisers nationwide,” said Ogin. “SVN will also bring national mentorship to our property management division, which will assist the quality and future growth of that department.”

Clark Commercial Group manages approximately 700,000 square feet of industrial, retail and office on Hawaii Island. Ogin will continue as the managing director of Sperry Van Ness – Clark Commercial Group once the transition is completed later this month.

Ota graduates basic training with honor

U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Ashleigh K. Ota graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Ota earned distinction as an honor graduate.

Ota is the daughter of Diane and Newton Ota of Carson City, Nev., and the sister of James Ota of Seattle and Misty Ota-Eitenier of Kealakekua. She is the granddaughter of Henry and Yuriko Ota of Kailua-Kona and Daniel and Martha Keliiaa of Kealakekua.
