Big Island police arrest 21 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from June 29 through Sunday.

Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21 years.

Kona District police arrested 11 motorists, while South Kohala officers arrested four individuals. South Hilo police arrested three drivers, Puna nabbed two individuals and Ka‘u police arrested one.

So far this year, there have been 513 DUI arrests compared with 636 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.3 percent.

There have been 759 major accidents so far this year compared with 810 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been 13 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with seven during the same period last year, an increase of 85.7 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs and three fatalities to a combination of both drugs and alcohol, police said.
