Senior ID cards to be issued

The Coordinated Services for the Elderly will issue senior ID cards for those 60 and older Monday through Friday at the Aging and Disability Resource Center.

Cards will also be issued from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center in Waimea, from 10 am. to 1 p.m. July 21 at Yano Hall in Captain Cook, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 22 at West Hawaii Civic Center and from 3 to 4 p.m July 28 at Hale Hauoli Senior Center in Honokaa.

Talk story to address concerns on roadways

“Street Talk,” a casual talk-story discussion of the perspectives and concerns of individuals using various travel modes including cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles or scooters to negotiate area streets will be held at 4:30 p.m. July 21 at Daylight Mind Coffee Co.

Attendances is limited to 15 and reservations must be made by Tuesday at Daylight Mind. Attendees will receive a gift certificate from the company.

Event organizers hope to gather various concerns and perspectives of those traveling on roadways.

Chamber networking event planned

Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce invites the public to its monthly networking event, AfterHours, which takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

This month’s AfterHours will be held Wednesday at 75-1022 Henry St. and is co-hosted by Kona MacNet, MK Kona Commons and Henry Street Shops.

The pau hana networking event affords attendees the chance to link with other businesses while learning about the area business community.

Pupu and refreshments will be served. Cost is $15 for chamber members and first-time nonmembers, or $30 for repeat nonmembers. Though registration is encouraged, walk-ins are welcomed.

National Active and Retired Federal Employees picnic planned

All active and retired federal employees are invited to attend the sixth annual picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 21 at Old Kona Airport Park Pavilion No. 3.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, salads, desserts and drinks will be served for $5 per person. Attendees may bring a friend and a favorite dish to share.

Meeting will address proposed plans for Waikoloa munitions cleanup

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled a public meeting to present proposed plans identifying the preferred alternative for environmental cleanup of munitions and explosives of concern for four munitions response sites within the former Waikoloa Maneuver Area. The sites are Area N, Area R, Area S, and Sector 16B. A map showing the locations is at poh.usace.army.mil/Missions/Environmental/FUDS/Waikoloa.aspx.

The meeting is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Waimea Elementary School cafeteria.

Proposed plans are available at the Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library for public review and will be available for 30 days. The Corps will accept written comments on the proposed plans until Aug. 17.

Hawaii Coffee Association conference and cupping contest planned

The 20th Hawaii Coffee Association Conference and Seventh Cupping Competition is Thursday through July 19 at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The event attracts statewide coffee industry growers, processors, roasters, wholesalers and retailers and is open to the public.

The conference includes workshops covering coffee quality, chemical compounds in green coffee, label compliance, quality control of roasting and packaging, cupping and eradication of the coffee berry borer beetle. Also on tap are legislative updates and reports from agencies including Hawaii’s Department of Agriculture, University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resource and the Hawaii Farm Bureau.

An expo, silent auction, coffee farm and processing tour and election of Hawaii Coffee Association officers are also planned. Winners of the cupping competition are announced Saturday at a dinner headlined by TV business reporter Howard Dicus.
