LIHUE (AP) — An audit of Kauai County’s payroll system found overpayments of employees that are losing the about $1,400.

The Garden Island reports (http://bit.ly/1fLhOeG ) that the audit, which looked at the county’s payroll system between 2009 and 2013, found a lack of proper documentation, overpayments and errors that create the potential for fraud.

The report shows that there were 43 times pay and benefits were improperly applied to the 40 employees sampled which resulted in about $1,400 of overpayment.

Kauai County Director of Human Resources Janine Rapozo says the county is looking correct past overpayments.

The auditor’s report shows that overpayment came from rates from the wrong bargaining unit being used or the wrong plan being applied as well as benefits being given when an employee did not choose them.
