Shriners pediatric orthopaedic specialist is available today

Shriners Hospitals for Children pediatric orthopaedic specialists will see children from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Kona Baptist Church, 78-7156 Puuloa Road in Kailua-Kona.

Children who have a bone, joint or muscle condition such as scoliosis, sports injuries or any other orthopaedic issues, can be helped by Shriners specialists. Shriners cares for children up to age 18 and accepts insurance or those with no insurance, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

Jonathan Pellett, who was recently named among the Best Doctors for 2015-16 by Pacific Business News and was 2014 Physician of the Year by the Healthcare Association of Hawaii, will be the attending pediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

Kona Library Book Club meets

Sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona, the Kona Library Book Club meets on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

This month’s selection is “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt. The book club will meet in August to discuss “Wave” by Sonali Deraniyagala.

Kailua-Kona Seniors meets

Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai. The facility will be open for assorted board games, bingo, pool and socializing. No formal meeting is planned

Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island receives $10,000 contribution

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation contributed $10,000 to the Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island as part of the Weinberg Project workday that the Waiakea Lions Club sponsored at the Pahoa Club.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island and the Waiakea Lions Club have a long history of partnership, dating as far back as the 1960s when the Waiakea Lions Club helped construct the baseball fields and fencing in Hilo. Many of the members of the Waiakea Lions Club were once members of the Boys and Girls Club and are now giving back to the club by volunteering their time and expertise.

Hadway appointed UH-Hilo Conference Center director

University of Hawaii at Hilo Chancellor Donald Straney announced the appointment of Lisa Hadway as director for the UH-Hilo Conference Center. Hadway assumed the position July 9.

For the past 24 years, Hadway has been employed in a variety of positions in natural resource management, the last 15 of which were with the state of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources. For the last year and a half, she served as the state administrator for the Division of Forestry and Wildlife where she was responsible for planning and management of natural and cultural resource projects across the state.

Hadway holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in zoology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa specializing in ecology, evolution and conservation biology. She also has an executive master’s degree in business administration from UH- Manoa. Hadway graduated from high school on Hawaii Island, and is a longterm resident.
