Over the years, this event has raised more than $1 million to support Hawaii Island’s fire/rescue and emergency response teams.

This year, the foundation will honor the following Hawaii County Fire Department personnel, recommended from within the department for their meritorious service above and beyond the call of duty: Capt. Michael Andrade, Capt. Charles Spain, Fire Equipment Operator David Mahon, Fires Rescue Specialist Dustin Frechette, Fire Rescue Specialist Riley Young, Fire Rescue Specialist Lyle Tamaribuchi, Fire Rescue Specialist Carl Pires, firefighter Yurik Resetnikov, firefighter Tay Soares, Water Safety Officer Jason Nixon, Fire Medical Specialist 2 Bertram Carvalho Jr., Fire Equipment Operator Donald Awa, Fire Battalion Chief Michael Hayashida and fire inspector Palani Kurashige.

Police conducting backpack drive

The Hawaii Police Department is conducting a backpack drive for children who cannot afford to buy them. As in previous years, all island police stations will double as drop-off points for individuals interested in helping children in need. Backpacks may be dropped off though Aug. 30.

Backpacks have been identified as the most requested nonfood item for charities in Hawaii. The donated backpacks will be distributed to children at women’s shelters, homeless shelters and transitional housing facilities around the Big Island.
