A 61-year old California man died Saturday after being involved in a one-vehicle crash in Hilo.

Responding to a 9:41 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined the driver was traveling south on Kanoelehua Avenue and operating a 2015 Ford four-door sedan when he ran off the right side of the road and struck a cement wall, according to the Hawaii Police Department. The crash occurred between Kahaopea and Kawailani streets.

Police believe that the driver may have suffered a medical condition prior to the crash.

Fire/rescue personnel took the driver to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:16 p.m. His name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

A coroner’s inquest case has been initiated and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Police waiting for autopsy results before counting this death toward the official traffic fatality count.
