Firefighters quelled a blaze in a storage unit at the Kona Inn on Friday afternoon.

The fire apparently started within the wall, said firefighters. Based on the damage, it appeared the fire may have been burning for several hours, they said.

Firefighters employed water and foam from the fire engine, along with fire extinguishers and a garden hose to control the blaze.

Its location in downtown Kona attracted a number of onlookers. One boy and his father spent several minutes watching the spray work along the area when the firefighters quelled the blaze. Before they left they spoke with the firefighters for a moment.

The Kona Inn remained open after the fire.

Six firefighters and three police officers responded to the fire. There was some traffic disruption at the nearby intersection, where emergency vehicles had stopped out of the path of traffic.
