‘Aida’ presentation slated Wednesday

The final Metropolitan Opera HD summer encore “Aida” will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Makalapua Cinemas. Tickets are $12.50. The opera will be sung in Italian with English subtitles.

The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD season 2015-16 will open with Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” at 12:55 p.m. Oct. 3 at the theater.

Palamanui representative available for prospective students

Carrie Kuwada-Phipps, educational specialist with Hawaii Community College — Palamanui will be at the Thelma Parker Public Library in Waimea from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and at the Kailua-Kona Public Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday with information on higher education opportunities at the new campus.

Opportunities include two-year associate’s degree and certificate programs through the community college and at least 40 bachelor’s, master’s, post-graduate certificate, and doctoral degree programs offered through the University Center through Distance Learning.

Kuwada-Phipps will have fact sheets on the new school and learning tools to prepare for Compass Testing. She can provide assistance with online applications.

The deadline to apply for the fall term is Saturday.

Bike MS event scheduled on weekend

The sixth annual Bike MS: Go BIG or Go Home cycling adventure will take place Saturday and Sunday in Waikoloa. Go BIG or Go Home riders enjoy a journey through volcanic landscapes, ocean views, paniolo ranches and historic towns reminiscent of old Hawaii. On Day One, participants will ride 65 miles along the northen coast from Waikoloa through Hawi and up to Kapaau and back. Day two brings a 50-mile trek to Kailua-Kona and back. Both days cover parts of the IRONMAN Triathlon bike course. The ride is fully supported with rest stops every seven to 11 miles and support and gear vehicles along the way.

The age minimum for this event is 16-years-old with a chaperone and anyone older than 18 can enjoy the ride unaccompanied. There is a registration fee of $30 and the fundraising minimum is $300. Money raised for the event supports the National MS Society’s efforts to create a world free of multiple sclerosis.

Trail culture course begins Aug. 29

Hawaii Community College — Palamanui campus is offering the course HWST 119 – Hawaii Island Trail Culture with instructor E. Kalani Flores.

The course is scheduled for Saturdays, Aug. 29, Sept. 12 and 26, Oct. 3, 17 and 24 and Nov 7, and one Sunday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities include moderate hiking. There are no prerequisites to enroll in this course. Students can earn three college credits or audit the class.

Many other courses are being offered at the new Palamanui campus. Register before Saturday for the fall semester.

Harrison leading meditation Sunday

“Awakening to the deepest truth of who we are: a gathering with Gavin Harrison” is scheduled form 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Rose’s Cottage, 65-1251 Laelae Way, Waimea. Sitting and walking meditation and discussion are planned. Groups are nondenominational and open to all. Experienced and beginning meditators are welcome. Bring a meditation cushion. Chairs are available. Donations are accepted.
