Teachers invited to apply for grants

Hawaii State Federal Credit Union has issued a call for applications for its 2015 Investing in Education grant program.

Applications for grant funding to support public school teachers will be accepted from Saturday through Sept. 30.

Investing in Education supports Hawaii educators with grants to purchase supplies, books, furniture and electric equipment, provides basic materials and funds classroom activities for students.

Eligible applicants are asked to submit an essay outlining how the grant will achieve classroom goals, with first-time recipients receiving priority. Grant recipients will be awarded funds between $200 and $500 based on the needs of the classroom.

Submissions will be reviewed and awarded as they are received, through the Sept. 30 deadline, until all 2015 program funds have been disbursed.

Thelma Parker Library offers Hawaiiana Room

Have you ever wished to look at a topographical map of the Big Island? Maybe you are looking for hiking trails that are not on private land? Have you ever wanted to investigate some of the battles fought in ancient times on the puu above Waimea? How about perusing old issues of the now-defunct Waimea Gazette? Also available are volumes of Waimea oral history, copies of the “Paka Paniolo” newsletter, volumes with photos of the living legends of Waimea, the Waimea historic photo project, ordnance removal reports, and yearbooks from all the schools in Waimea. This information and much more is available in the newly remodeled Hawaiiana Reference Room at the Thelma Parker Memorial Public Library.

Pam Akao, the head librarian, said that there are gaps in the copies of the yearbooks so if anyone has one to donate, check to see if it is one that the library is missing.

The Friends of Thelma Parker Library paid for the room to be completely remodeled with new paint, shelving units, file drawers, map cases and organizational items. There is a large table for laying out research, comfortable chairs for reading and good lighting. The room is locked so those who wish to use it must ask for the key to gain access. None of the materials can be checked out but may be copied to take home.
