Hawaii Volcanoes National Park program schedule announced

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will hold several programs in August. All programs are free, but park entrance fees apply and a $2 donation helps support park programs.

Hawaii Island artist and interpretive guide Kent Olsen will present “Kilauea’s Night Skies: An Artist’s Perspective” from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium. Utilizing the current lava lake within Halemaumau Crater as a point of reference, attendees will journey from the depths of the quantum realm to the edge of the cosmos as Olsen attempts to describe the natural world and the scale of the seemingly infinite.

Park Ranger Julia Espaniola shares her knowledge and love for some of the island’s native plants and their traditional uses from 10 a.m to noon Wednesday on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.

​​Under the direction of kumu hula Mailelaulani Canario, Halau o Mailelaulani​ will give a free performance from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 19 in the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. ​​

Ukulele lessons will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 26 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai. Attendees will learn about the history of this world-famous instrument and how to play a simple tune. Join rangers from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as they share their knowledge and love of the Hawaiian culture.

Kaloko Fishpond road closed for tree trimming

The access road to Kaloko Fishpond and the parking lot will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday because of coconut tree trimming. The Kaloko gravel road (Ala Nui Kaloko) is off Highway 19 between mile markers 96 and 97.

Brain injury support group meets

The Kona Brain Injury Support group will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services, just mauka of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.

David Chen, a caregiver and husband, will speak about caregiver issues that arise while caring for a spouse with a traumatic brain injury. He will give tips and advice from his personal prospective and offer “survival tips” to maintain a healthy relationship that can be very stressful.

Invited are all brain injury, stroke or other neuro-trauma survivors, their families and caregivers, interested professionals and the public.

Kona Choral Society Youth Chorus season begins

Kona Choral Society Youth Chorus practice starts Thursday. The group rehearses from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. in the chorus room at Kealakehe Intermediate School.

After refreshments at 3:10 p.m., the group gathers for activities, improving singing and learning a variety of songs. The Youth Chorus performs frequently throughout the year including a Christmas concert and a round-the-island tour.

There is no tuition charge. All students from grades three through 12 are welcome. The elementary chorus is directed by Marinella Savarese (grades three, four and five) and the upper school chorus (grades six through 12) is directed by Bernaldo Evangelista.

Kahilu Theatre holds Family Fun Day

Kahilu Theatre will host a free Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to celebrate the launch of the theater’s 2015-16 presenting season.

Information about Kahilu Theatre’s 35th season of shows and events will be released during the event. Shave ice will be given to the first 50 attendees.

Moco the Clown and Red Robyn will be featured in the lobby, starting at 10 a.m. Juggling lessons will be taught by Cirque Ohana, a new after-school program at Kahilu Theatre.

Free dance workshops will be led by teachers from Prince Dance Institute from 10 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 1 p.m. Online registration for 12 classes offered by Prince Dance Institute and Cirque Ohana will begin Monday.

Life in Pursuit, a young three-piece group from Hamakua, will perform at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Two family shows will be presented on the main stage at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Performers will include Moco the Clown, Kumsa, Isla and members of Cirque Ohana, and students and staff from Keiki Performing Arts Workshop.
