KARES does not take animals to Humane Society

We feel that it is extremely important to comment on the letter of Paul Santos, “Animals deserve our love and care,” Aug. 5, West Hawaii Today, in which he reports that a worker at the Hawaii Island Humane Society told him that the Kohala Animal Relocation and Education Service brings in dogs all of the time to be put down.

This is absolutely not true. KARES abides by the “no kill” philosophy and has never surrendered a dog (or cat) to the HIHS. In contrast, KARES removes many healthy dogs and cats from the HIHS that are in danger of being killed (euthanized) and has found caring homes for them. KARES rescues abused, abandoned and injured animals. Last year, we found homes for 320 dogs and 45 cats. We also provided free spay and neuter surgeries for a total of 1,016 dogs.

Our mission is saving the lives of animals on the island. It is a defamation of our organization and a true meanness of spirit that an employee of the HIHS should tell Mr. Santos or any other resident that KARES brings in animals to be destroyed by the HIHS. We hope that this worker will be identified and severely reprimanded.
