John Wayne celebrated during Paniolo Preservation Society fundraiser

Paniolo Preservation Society will honor “The Duke” John Wayne at its Biennial Paniolo Heritage Dinner and Live Auction on Saturday at Pukalani Stables in Waimea. The fundraiser celebrates Wayne’s commitment to ranching culture and his personal connection to Hawaii’s paniolo. Paniolo Preservation Society will host the event in cooperation with the Wayne family.

The evening includes pupu, dinner, a live auction of paniolo and John Wayne related items, country music by Willie-Joe and Damien and dancing. Tickets are $150 per person or $1,500 for a 10-person table. They can be purchased from Paniolo Preservation Society board members, at Parker Ranch Store (cash or check only), Kamuela Liquor Store and Kua Aina Saddlery at Pukalani Stables. All proceeds benefit Paniolo Preservation Society.

For more information, call 854-1541, email paniolo@paniolopreservation.org or visit paniolopreservation.org.

Playing a cowboy on the silver screen wasn’t the extent of Wayne’s interest in the culture. He was an accomplished horseman, an avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and sailor. Wayne loved the outdoors and held a special place in his heart for those who worked the land through ranching and farming.

During the 1960s, “The Duke” visited Parker Ranch. Wayne had mutual friends with the ranch’s last family owner, Richard Smart, through their Hollywood connections. Besides owning Parker Ranch, Smart was an accomplished “song and dance man” on Broadway in the 1940s and ‘50s.
