VAC offers Japanese woodblock printing workshop
The public is invited to learn the art of mokuhanga, traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking, during a four-session workshop that begins Aug. 27 at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.
Mokuhanga is a relief printing technique that uses Japanese tools and natural materials. Instructor Glenn Yamanoha will introduce the basic process, covering fundamental techniques of Mokuhanga, such as cutting with chisels, preparing blocks and paper, registration, and printing with a baren (printing pad).
Mokuhanga differs from western woodblock in that it is water-based printing with sumi ink, watercolor and nori (rice paste), so no toxic solvents are used; it is printed with a hand held baren rather than a press; and it employs the “kento” registration method, cut directly into the block. By using nontoxic, “green” materials, it readily combines traditional processes with new printing technologies.
The workshop will consist of four two-hour classes held Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus starting Aug. 27, and continuing Sept. 3, 10 and 17. Course fee is $63 for VAC members and $70 for nonmembers. No experience is necessary for this introductory workshop. Supplies will be provided for the first class only and VAC will provide the supply list on their website.

Kona Town Night Market is Aug. 29
Kona Brewing Co. and The Brewery Block will host the free community gathering event Kona Town Night Market on Aug. 29 to benefit Ride The Breaks, an annual urban arts festival now in its seventh year.
The theme for the August night market event is centered around Ride the Breaks, a multi-day urban arts festival that will culminate with live art, deejaying, emceeing, dance competitions and more during the evening. Kona Town Night Market will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. This family friendly event at The Brewery Block is free and open to all ages.
The market will feature live music, a vendor marketplace, live art, interactive demonstrations, and a Kona Brewing Co. beer garden for those age 21 and older. Proceeds from the beer garden on Aug. 29 will benefit Innovations Public Charter School and Ride The Breaks.
Rowan plans shows in Kona, Hilo
Singer-songwriter, Grammy-Award winner Peter Rowan takes the stage Aug. 28 at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.
Rowan, a legendary master practitioner of folk, blues and bluegrass, has released such songs as “Midnight Moonlight,” “No Women No Cry,” “That High Lonesome Sound” and “Panama Red” a mega hit for New Riders of The Purple Sage. His career spans more than five decades from his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, to his time with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman in Old &In the Way. He has also built a devoted, international fan base through a solid stream of records, collaborative projects with Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Mark O’Connor, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas and constant touring.
Doors for the Aug. 28 Aloha Theatre concert open at 7 p.m. with music getting underway at 7:30 p.m. A second show is slated Aug. 29 at Naniloa Hotel in Hilo. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show at 7:30.

Waimea Community Chorus begins rehearsal season
Waimea Community Chorus will begin its 22nd Holiday Concert Rehearsal Season on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Waimea.
New singers are welcome and auditions are not required, but members must be able to commit to Tuesday evening rehearsals through performances in mid-December. The concert will feature both traditional and modern Christmas selections, as well as a commissioned choral work for the season.

APAC offers ‘Dance for Actors’ class
Need help polishing the dreaded box step? Having difficulty with a three-point-turn? Wondering how to maintain balance while chorus line kicking? We have the class for you. Aloha Performing Arts Company is offering a four-session workshop to help actor/dancers learn basic and period dance steps, dance style, terminology and choreography for self improvement, confidence building and in preparation for upcoming auditions.
Juanita Finkenberg, who choreographed “Evita” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.,” will be the instructor of “Dance For Actors.” The sessions will cover court dance, Broadway musical choreography, simple partnering to include basic lifts and managing dance auditions. Emphasis will be placed on footwork, floor patterns, rhythm and style. Several choreographed sequences will be introduced.
Individuals age 16 and older are welcome. Character or dance shoes are recommended. Beginners are especially welcome and skilled dancers are encouraged to attend.
The workshop will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays (Sept. 26, Oct. 3, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24) at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. No class will be held on Oct. 10 because of the Ironman World Championship. Early enrollment is encouraged because of a limited class size. Kona Choral Society plans open house
The Kona Choral Society welcomes plans an open house Sept. 2 at Kealakehe Intermediate School. Newcomers should arrive at 5:30 p.m., while returning singers should arrive at 6 p.m.
No audition is required. Weekly rehearsals are held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Fall rehearsals will culminate in holiday-themed concerts in November and December.
On the fall 2015 repertoire are “Messiah” by G.F. Handel (Christmas portion); “Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten; “What Sweeter Music” by John Rutter; “Pasko Na Naman” arranged by George G. Hernandez; “Frozen” (Choral Suite) from Disney’s “Frozen;” and Christmas favorites like “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “The Christmas Song.”
