Grant funds meals for homeless, at-risk keiki

Friends of Kona Pacific Public Charter School-West Hawaii Summer Food Program received a $28,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s Hawaii State Giving Council. The grant helped fund a new program serving homeless and at-risk children in the Kailua-Kona area. Each day from June 8 to July 31, the program prepared and distributed 150 lunches to homeless and at-risk children in West Hawaii.

“When we heard that there wasn’t going to be a summer food program in Kona, and our community’s children were in danger of going hungry, we knew that we had to step up and applied for a Walmart grant,” said Chris Hecht, executive director of the Kona Pacific Public Charter School. “We are so appreciative that Walmart’s Hawaii State Giving Council understood our community needs, and with their support, we were able to fight childhood hunger in Kona this summer.”

Additional information about the program’s funding guidelines and application process is available at walmartfoundation.org/stategiving.
