HONOLULU — Vandals began to cut through a Hawaiian Telcom cable in Moanalua but abandoned their plan, possibly because of electric shock.
KITV-TV reports that the cut triggered alarms at the company’s Network Operations Center around 11 p.m. Thursday.
The partially severed high voltage cable was in a manhole off a bike path. The people who cut it may have been attempting to steal copper.
Hawaiian Telcom’s copper has been stolen twice this summer in the same area in Kalihi.
About 25 customers had reported disruptions with phone, Internet or TV service by Friday afternoon, but more could be impacted.
Hawaiian Telcom repair crews will be placing new cables throughout the weekend until service is fully restored.
