Four people were arrested and two of them charged following a report of an incident involving a weapon early Friday.
At 5:21 a.m. Friday, Kona Patrol officers responded to a condominium complex on the 75-5800 block of Walua Road in Kailua-Kona.
A resident told police he was awoken by a “loud banging noise from the condo’s garage,” police wrote. The man investigated and found an unknown man and woman standing next to another resident’s parked car. The two people ran to a gold SUV and jumped in, where a male and female were sitting int he back seat.
The man tried to stop the strangers from leaving by taking the keys to the SUV and the driver pointed a handgun at the man. The resident threw the keys into the SUV, left and called police.
Officers spotted the SUV in a parking lot on Alii Drive and witnesses said they saw two men and two women running from the vehicle. The witnesses provided descriptions and officers arrested the four. One, Darren Grace, 33, of Kailua-Kona, was arrested at 8:45 a.m., police said. A 15-year-old girl was released to family members and the adults were held in the police cellblock as the investigation continued.
Police determined that the SUV was stolen and recovered it, along with a bag believed to belong to one of the suspects. From the bag and the SUV, detectives recovered a firearm and property determined to have been taken during other crimes allegedly committed between Aug. 18 and 21.
Lt. Gerald Wike said much of the property could be returned to the original owners, in part because those people marked or logged their property. He said it’s important for people to either take down serial numbers or put distinguishing marks on their property.
This can be especially important with electronics, he said, which may be produced in multiple models that are difficult to distinguish.
Keeping a record of property will also make recovery more likely, he said.
Grace was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of burglary, eight counts of theft, four weapons offenses, robbery, three counts of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, two counts of criminal property damage and one count each of trespassing and unauthorized possession of personal confidential information. His bail was set at $279,000.
Shivonne Kahee, 18, of Kailua-Kona, was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of burglary, six counts of theft, three counts of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, two counts of criminal property damage and one count each of trespassing and unauthorized possession of personal confidential information. Her bail was set at $20,250.
At 10:30 p.m. Saturday, after conferring with prosecutors, detectives released Dylan Myers, 21, of Kailua-Kona, pending further investigation.
Grace and Kahee remained at the cellblock until their initial court appearance on Monday.
