John Mydock’s turned and adorned curly mango bowl titled “As Above, So Below” earned the “Best of Show” award during the Harbor Gallery Summer Wood Show 2015.

Mydock’s detailed pyrographic design around the rim and on the back illustrates undersea life, and correlates to life forms above the water and land, and tells a story of the interaction of life above and below the water’s surface. There is very fine detail in this piece, which captivated audiences into voting for this piece more than any other single piece in the show of 40 entries.

Mydock’s piece was deemed “Best of Show” after hundreds of ballots were counted from participating viewers of the show.

First place for turning went to Michael Patrick Smith for his piece “Perpetual Motion.” The hollow vessel is made from mango features a design burned into the wood, a process called pyrography.

First place for joinery was awarded to Frank Chase for his “Blanket Chest” composed of curly koa with milo trim and handles, and lined inside with aromatic cedar.

First place for sculpture was given to Craig Nichols for his “Flying Out of Harm’s Way,” which depicted two malolo or flying fish made from koa, ohia and mango.

First place for the open category also went to Chase for his “.308 Long Air Gun,” a handmade and custom-designed air gun that accepts a 3,000 PSI charge from a scuba tank, with curly koa stock, grips and accent pieces. The piece also comes with the filler connector and pellets, as well as instructions.

Each first place winner receives $100 and the “Best of Show” award recipient receives $250. All winners will have their entries displayed on the posters, postcards and advertising for the next show, the Winter Wood Show 2016, to be held at Harbor Gallery starting Jan. 9.

Those who missed the summer show can still view the items that may still be on display and for sale at the Kawaihae gallery. Harbor Gallery is open from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.
