A man is missing, and his sister is perplexed as the search continues.

Gregory Allen Voight, 33, of Mountain View, was last seen when a woman reported seeing him go out to sea in a kayak at 6:30 a.m. Aug. 9 at the Pahoehoe Beach Park.

The woman reported the incident to the Coast Guard when he hadn’t returned by 8 p.m. and identified him from a photo lineup.

She told police she’d seen Voight before going spearfishing. But on Aug. 9 he didn’t have any of that — instead it was a wooden kayak with steel oars.

Police also found his vehicle, which had been considered abandoned and towed. Officer Tyler Jelsma investigated the case and found nothing suspicious in the vehicle.

“He was kind of a hippie character,” his sister, Sarah Voight, said.

Greg Voight’s family lives on the mainland. Sarah Voight said contact was somewhat infrequent, although their father had visited in July. Their father did speak to Greg Voight every few weeks, she said.

As they have began to investigate, his actions became confusing and out of character, she said.

He dropped out of college, despite being on the edge of graduation, she said.

Sarah Voight said he told classmates he was leaving to deal with a family emergency.

“There was no family emergency,” she said.

A long-term relationship suddenly ended, but the timeline there is unusual, she said.

The ex-girlfriend said they stopped dating in March, Sara Voight said, but his father’s visit came in July. And at that time, Greg Voight was talking to his girlfriend for hours and referring to her as his girlfriend, Sara Voight said.

But those events are well before his disappearance.

“I can see my brother taking off,” she said.

But he was too responsible to abandon his commitments and agreements, she added.

He left a property where he was living as a property supervisor, without arranging for someone to cover for him. He left his vehicle at the beach instead of giving it away.

To Sarah Voight, that shows he planned to leave for a short amount of time and return.

She said it would make sense for him to go off in a kayak, looking for insight or to see something.

She thinks he is somewhere at sea, drifting, or washed up somewhere.
