PEARL CITY (AP) — Police have captured a 2 ½-foot-long snake in a Pearl City garage.
The state Department of Agriculture says residents of the home called police Monday evening. Officers captured the non-venomous ball python and took it to the Pearl City substation.
While ball pythons are common pets on the mainland, snakes are illegal in Hawaii. Snakes have no natural predators in Hawaii and pose a serious threat to the islands’ environment. Many snake species prey on birds and eggs, increasing the threat to Hawaii’s native birds.
Ball pythons are native to Africa. They can grow to be up to 6-feet long.
Agricultural inspectors are investigating how the snake ended up in Hawaii.
