West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy will host a swing and ballroom dance workshop for children ages 6 to 17 on Sept. 27 in Kailua-Kona.

The class, taught by instructuor Lindsey Hoyer, will run from 4 to 6 p.m. at the acedemy located off Alapa Street. Cost is $20.

Hoyer grew up going out dancing with her father most every weekend from the time she was 8 years old until she went off to college. In college, she taught many friends how to dance and started a dance night for students. After college she worked in a variety of files and moved around quite a bit. After marrying her husband Brian, and becoming pregnant with Journey, their first daughter, they started a dance business called The Atrium in Stanwood, Wash. There, they taught more than 1,000 people to dance in six years. Hoyer is passionate about teaching kids to dance and is excited to introduce lead and follow dancing to keiki on the Big Island.

In the workshop, kids will learn how to carry themselves confidently and with good posture. They will become comfortable introducing themselves, being social and welcoming to peers. They will learn about frame and how to communicate nonverbally through lead and follow dancing.
