Landscapers conference slated for Oct. 24

The Hawaii Island Landscape Association and the University of Hawaii at Manoa Cooperative Extension Service will host the sixth annual Landscape Management Conference and Trade Show on Oct. 24 at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

The theme is “Waiola — the water of life, preserving our most precious natural resource.” In addition to conserving water in the landscape, related topics include preserving the island watershed, preventing storm water runoff through low-impact design and protecting coral reef systems.

The event provides management tools for professional landscape gardeners, nursery owners and property managers, and is open to the public. The program features experts from the landscape industry and UH.

With two tracks of seminars, attendees can choose classes in irrigation management, turf care and ornamental plant management. The trade show features the latest products and services offered to Hawaii Island landscapers and home gardeners. Continuing education units will be available for certified landscape technicians, tree workers and arborists.

Cost is $100 for HILA members and $120 for nonmembers. Continental breakfast and lunch are included. For information and registration, visit hilahawaii.com or contact Ty McDonald at tym@hawaii.edu or 322-4884.

Taste of the Range scheduled Friday

While “grazing” at more than 60 culinary stations and exhibit booths, attendees at the 20th Mealani’s Taste of the Hawaiian Range can get in on some new activities that promote local and sustainable food production on Hawaii Island.

The anniversary event is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and boasts a lineup of chefs from Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island — plus samples offered by local food producers and exhibits presenting topics related to island agriculture.

Each attending family will receive a complimentary copy of the “Taste of the Hawaiian Range 20th Anniversary Cookbooklet,” filled with recipes by local chefs and members of the local beef industry.

Also new in 2015 is a digital scavenger hunt where up to 500 guests can answer questions, take photos and learn more about Big Island agriculture — using their smartphones — for a chance to win prizes including restaurant gift certificates and local food products.

In addition, attendees will be able to connect with exhibit booths through a QR code image posted at each table. The code will connect smartphone users to online product discounts, coupons and links for educational resources.

Anniversary festivities will include honoring the event’s 20-year participants and others who have been long-term supporters.

Tickets are $45 or $60 at the door. Entry to the “Cooking 101” workshop is $10. Tickets are on sale at islandwide locations and online. Tickets locations include Kuhio Grille in Hilo, JJ’s Country Market in Honokaa, Kamuela Liquors and Parker Ranch Store in Waimea, Kona Wine Market in Kailua-Kona and Kohala Essence Shop at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Purchase tickets online at tasteofthehawaiianrange.com.

Free parking and shuttle service from Anaehoomalu Bay will be offered from noon to 10 p.m.; follow parking signs on Waikoloa Beach Drive. Guests are encouraged to come early to avoid shuttle lines. For general event information, call 969-8209.

HPA students perform Friday

Fourth- and fifth-graders at Hawaii Preparatory Academy will present “Theseus and the Minotaur” at 1:45 p.m. Friday. The musical performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gates Performing Arts Center on the school’s upper campus.

Young Prince Theseus, son of Poseidon, must save Athens from the Cretan Minotaur, which has been devouring Athenians. This might be his last chance to prove himself; Hercules already has cleared out most of the “really good monsters.” With the help of the clever Ariadne, daughter of evil King Minos, Theseus enters the labyrinth.

This is the first of a series of musical productions by HPA’s lower school students. The second- and third-graders will present the next show Nov. 20.
