HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu’s newest homeless shelter is set to open in the next few weeks, but those in charge of the facility are still scrambling to collect the items needed to make it livable.
Hawaii News Now reports (http://bit.ly/1Psnecp ) that the city supplied the funds for container units and personnel to run Sand Island’s Hale Mauliola, but did not pay for furnishing and appliances for the 37 units. The shelter still lacks beds, fans, lockers and several other basic items.
The Institute for Human Services is asking for the public’s help in getting items for the individual units and for the public areas of the shelter.
IHS spokesman Kimo Carvalho says the materials that aren’t donated will need to be purchased.
