Business registration services coming to Kona

The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ Business Action Center is partnering with Hawaii County’s Department of Research and Development to bring its business registration services to Kona.

Hawaii County will host BAC Days once a month at the West Hawaii Civic Center. On BAC Days, West Hawaii residents can receive in-person assistance with state business registration filings, tax licensing, and employer registration.

BAC Days will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 22, Nov. 18, Dec. 16, Jan. 14 and Feb. 11. Customers are encouraged to call the Kona Business Resource Center to confirm the dates and times at 323-4700.

Bridge lessons begin Thursday

The Kona Bridge Club is offering a five-week beginning class teaching the basics of bridge. The first introductory lesson begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the new Kuleana School in the Pottery Terrace complex. The group will meet for one hour with additional time for practice. Classes will continue at this time and day.

Meetings to focus on drug problems

Council member Margaret Wille, members of the Hawaii Police Department including Vice Lt. Sherry Bird, police narcotics specialist and representatives from the Big Island Substance Abuse Council and Hamakua Kohala Health Center will conduct a meeting including a community brainstorming session on how the community can provide more support to those on the front line dealing with the drug crisis. Meetings are scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at Hawaiian Homes Hall in Waimea and 5 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Intergenerational Building in Kapaau.

Sotheby’s affiliates launch charitable fund

To celebrate the launch of its newly established charitable fund, the statewide Hawaii affiliates of Sotheby’s International Realty united donors and recipients at the Honolulu Museum of Art. The evening showcased the importance of being a part of Hawaii’s close-knit community and providing support to its people. Nearly 200 Sotheby’s International Realty agents, staff, clients and invited guests from four islands gathered to celebrate the “Art of Giving” and support the fund, which endows local programs and nonprofits focused on conservation of the natural environment, nurturing education and preservation of Hawaii’s unique culture.

Administered by the Hawaii Community Foundation, the newly launched fund is a philanthropic endeavor created by four Sotheby’s International Realty affiliates on four islands: Island Sotheby’s International Realty, Maui; LIST Sotheby’s International Realty, Oahu; MacArthur Sotheby’s International Realty, Big Island; and Sleeping Giant Sotheby’s International Realty, Kauai.

Aloha Quilters meeting Saturday

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Living Stones Church, 76-6224 Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.

The group is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. It meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

AAUW establishes education fun

Members of the American Association of University Women-Kona have created a nonprofit fund to support the educational activities of their branch.

AAUW-Kona Educa-tional Fund was recognized as a 501(c)(3) by the IRS as of Sept. 24. Also known as AKEF, this fund will raise money to support on-going activities such as Girls Exploring Math and Science and college scholarships, but will also explore other activities to enhance the educational opportunities of girls and women in West Hawaii.
