Hawaii Electric Light Co. is warning its customers about a telephone scam that may affect customers on the Big Island.
Customers reported receiving telephone calls from a caller who claimed to be a HELCO representative. The customers reported that they were told that their electric bill was delinquent and that they were subject to immediate disconnection. The customers were directed to pay their utility bill at an “Express Payment Center.” The caller discouraged the customers from making payments at the utility’s customer service office.
HELCO encourages customers to call its customer service office at 969-6999 if they receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to represent the company. Employees will not call and direct customers to submit payment via options other than the company’s approved payment methods which are listed on the back of your bill or at www.hawaiielectriclight.com.
