Coffee and Art Stroll returns to Holualoa

The Holualoa Homeowners Association and Kona Coffee Farmers Association will host the 17th annual Coffee and Art Stroll from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Holualoa.

Art galleries will be open for browsing and area chefs will offer food including omelets, crepes, sushi, pizza, Indonesian cuisine and baked goods.

There will be 35 farmers offering tastings of their Kona coffee roasts and attendees may vote for their favorite at the People’s Choice Award booth. Morgan Starr from Mi’s Italian Bistro, Halley Archibald of Holuakoa Cafe and Chris Phillips from Lava Java will judge the 100 percent Kona Coffee Five Star Chef’s Award.

Kona Coffee Festival buttons and T-shirts will be at the festival booth.

Native plant sale is Friday in Waimea

The public is invited to an Arbor Day plant sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife Kamuela State Tree Nursery, located at 66-1220 A Lalamilo Road in Waimea.

Sale items will include native plants such as koa, ohia, native hibiscus species, sandalwood, cypress and pines. The cost for dibble tube seedlings will start at $1 each, and bigger trees in pots are also available. A two-gallon pot will run up to $11.

Vendors sought for church bazar in Waiohinu

Kauahaao Congre-gational Church in Waiohinu, Ka’u will hold a fundraising bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 21.

Individuals, school and athletic groups, clubs and churches are invited to be vendors at the flea market. The charge for a 10-foot by 10-foot vendor space is $10. Vendors need to bring their own tent, tables, chairs and if power is needed, a generator. Vendors can sell anything except hot food or plate lunches.

During the bazaar the church will sell kalua pig plate lunches and containers of kalua pig, hot dogs and baked goods. There will be entertainment throughout the day.

The church is on the corner of Mamalahoa Highway, Kamaoa Road and Pinao Street, just above the Wong Yuen Store and gas station.

Native trees to be given away in Hilo

Hawaii Electric Light Co. will host an Arbor Day Tree Giveaway Saturday at its Hilo office at 1200 Kilauea Avenue. Trees will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon or while supplies last.

Trees to be given away this year include kookoolau, kokio keokeo, kou, kukui, mamaki, milo and niu.

The annual event is a partnership with Kua O Ka La Public Charter School, Hooulu Lahui, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program and Hawaii Electric Light. To help perpetuate native species, organizations across the state routinely organize educational events to distribute native trees and shrubs to the community.

Kua O Ka La students care for the trees and compile a newsletter to distribute with the trees. Information on how to properly plant, site, and care for the tree also is distributed. Students and instructors will be available to educate the public on how to care for their trees and explain the cultural significance of the native plants.

Blood drives scheduled

Several blood drives are scheduled in November in West Hawaii.

People may donate blood from 11:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Monday or from 7 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Kona Stake Center Cultural Hall at 75-230 Kalani St. In Waimea, donors may give blood from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Waimea Ward Cultural Hall, 65-1168 Kapiolani Road.

Those who wish to give blood must be in good health, at least 18 years old, or 17 with signed Blood Bank of Hawaii parent/legal guardian consent form, weigh 110 pounds or more and bring a valid photo ID with date of birth.
