UnCollege experience-based program discussed

Parker School invites the community to a presentation and discussion with Evert Zelaya and Cody Hartley with UnCollege, an experience-based program to empower young adults to take control of their education through a blended approach of self-directed learning. The presentation is open to the public and will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Parker School’s Theatre.

Parents are encouraged to attend to learn about the different opportunities and options available to help children reach their full potential.

UnCollege uses self-directed learning, mentorship, one-on-one coaching, skill building and practice through gap year programs aimed at better equipping students for future endeavors. Research shows those who take a gap year before attending college have a lower student burnout rate, higher grade point averages, are more likely to graduate than peer, perform better in their first semester at college and have higher job satisfaction after graduating.

Input sought on proposed sea cucumber harvesting limits

In response to large-scale commercial harvest of sea cucumbers earlier this year, the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources has scheduled public hearings on a new rule to permanently regulate sea cumber harvesting in state waters.

The West Hawaii public meeting will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Kealakehe High School cafeteria.

Currently all sea cumber harvest is prohibited by a 120-day emergency rule.

The proposed new rule will provide long-term protection of sea cucumbers. Those unable to attend can submit written testimony by Nov. 20 to Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 330, Honolulu, HI 96813 or dlnr.aquatics@hawaii.gov.
