The Windward Planning Commission approved permits Thursday for a Hele-On bus base yard in Hilo and a cell phone tower in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

The $11.2 million base yard on Hoolaulima Road will include a 26,500-square-foot building and a 19,500-square-foot warehouse. It will consolidate the Hawaii County Mass Transit Agency’s administration and maintenance facilities.

Construction could begin by the end of the year and be complete by the end of 2016, Executive Director Tiffany Kai has estimated.

Previously funded at $10 million, the County Council is considering a request to add $2 million to cover the project’s cost.

The new Verizon cellphone tower will be built at 15-1839 32nd Ave.

The commission took no action on another request for a permit to build a Verizon cellphone tower at 11-3019 Volcano Road because the landowner was on the mainland and couldn’t attend the meeting.
