Whale sanctuary seeks advisory council applicants

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is seeking to fill seven primary and 10 alternate seats on its advisory council. The council ensures public participation in sanctuary matters and provides advice to sanctuary management.

The sanctuary is accepting applications for the following seats: Hawaii County (primary and alternate); Lanai Island (alternate); citizen-at-large (alternate); education (alternate); tourism (alternate); whale watching (primary and alternate); fishing (primary and alternate); research (primary); Honolulu County (primary); Kauai County (primary and alternate); Maui County (primary and alternate); and Molokai Island (alternate).

Applicants who are chosen as members or alternates should expect to serve a two-year term.

Tutu’s House announces November schedule

Tutu’s House in Waimea will host several free health and wellness programs in November.

Beginner’s yoga will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday with Kiyomi Falcon.

Tina Stuart will lead “Invest Your Charity Dollars Wisely” from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

“Gurdjieff, the Fourth Way, an Exploration” is planned from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Nov. 25.

Amy Elizabeth and Marc Gordon, who both have master’s degrees in contemplative psychotherapy, will lead “You Make Sense to Me,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

La Leche League of Kamuela, a group that supports breastfeeding mothers, will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, with Colleen Mason.

Restorative yoga is planned from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday Nov. 12, 19 with Ashley Flemino.

“Holiday Madness…Sugar, Depression and Stress” is planned from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 with naturopathic physician Deborah Ardolf. She will discuss ways to breeze through the holiday season healthier and happier than ever before.

Those who need a gentle and slow yoga are invited to a chair yoga class from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Nov. 13, 20 with Michiko Sato.

A family science night at Earl’s Garage will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13. Food and supplies are provided. Space is limited. Register by Wednesday: Katherine, 885-6777

An overview of Medicare basics, including eligibility criteria, parts of Medicare, enrollment periods and the difference between Medicare advantage and Medicare supplement plans will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 16.

“Rewire the Brain for More Happiness” is planned from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, with JonMarie Kaulele, medical support clinical hypnotherapist. She will teach practices that are helpful for stress and trauma relief.

The Waimea monthly book club will discuss “Mink River” by Brian Doyle from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 17. Attendees should bring a pupu to share. Info: Kathy, 430-0922

Big Island Retired Military Association awards scholarship

The Big Island Retired Military Association presented the 2015-16 BIRMA-Mark Allen Traxler Memorial scholarship certificate of $2,000 to Amy McBride of Keaau at the association’s August meeting. The award is in memory of Mark Traxler, son of James and Carol Traxler of Kailua-Kona.

McBride graduated from Keaau High School and has been accepted at Hawaii Community College where she will study nursing.

McBride was the valedictorian of her graduating class. She was team captain of the Keaau High School paddling team, and participated in Keaukaha Canoe Club throughout her high school attendance. She also received a certificate of appreciation for Make a Difference Day in 2014. McBride would like to become a pediatric nurse.

The Big Island Retired Military Association awards annual scholarships to Hawaii Island high school seniors who are children of an active duty, reserve, or National Guard member of the armed forces or the child or grandchild of a person who retired from the armed forces with 20 or more years of active military service, or to those who have completed at least two years in a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps or Civil Air Patrol program at the time of application.
