WAIMEA — Suffering a loss of a loved one can be difficult any time of the year, but holidays can be nearly unbearable.

North Hawaii Hospice in Waimea, under the direction of bereavement coordinator and therapist Inez Schultz, knows this. That’s why they provided a Holiday Circle of Support on Wednesday, where participants created unique collages of their loved ones using photos and mementos along with provided craft materials.

“Expressive art is a very effective therapy in dealing with any kind of loss,” Schultz said. “Hopefully, those who come here will learn that art can be relaxing and they can go home and continue.”

Using arts and crafts can be less intimidating for some people who do not feel comfortable sharing their feelings with others. Grief support groups meet regularly and participants do not need to be previously involved in Hospice. All programs are free.
